SILENCE HIDES VIOLENCE

DVB201: #oneperday2022

The persuasive poster

This weeks task was to create a persuasive poster with one chosen cause to attract the  a specific target audience. I chose to focus on young adults (20-25 high SES) and the cause violence against women. "Silence hides violence" is a campaign to stop violence against women and encourage people to speak up against violent or threatening behaviour towards women.

Idea sketching
Three iterations

Tools: 4b graphite pencil, 120gsm cartridge paper
Technique: Rough sketching technique, with line weight and shading for definition

Image one: Silence hides violence was the first sketch I completed over the "oneperday" activity. I spent some time researching a variety of causes and tops and was very drawn to doing a persuasive poster for stopping violence against women. The sketch is a representation of a women being silenced and her identity taken away, which I found to have a powerful association with the cause. It was to represent all women and be easily empathised with.

Image two: Let me walk home safe was the second image I created after doing more research into the topic. I found that often women do not feel safe walking home and night alone and often become victims of violence or abuse in doing so. This image was to represent a women being free and safe. It is to portray a carefree safety and was hoped to encourage the viewer to think about what it meant to be a woman walking free and feeling safe.

Image three: Let me be safe was the third image that I created and it was supposed to portray a woman being relaxed, comfortable and unthreatened. Often in western society it is considered "improper" for a woman to sit with her legs in an open position. However, it represents a comfortable and relaxed sitting position. The third image was designed for the viewer to question how they perceive women and that they have the right to be expressed in what ever way they please.

Reflection: Overall I am quite happy with the three sketch's although they are not technically the most sophisticated drawings they each convey a significant and relatable message to the viewer.  While each imaged portrayed a similar message I found that the image in image one held a striking story that could be understood without a considerable amount of text. If the other images could be added as part of a series campaign I feel they would be more effective. As even presented with the other sketch's I finds adds value to each image and combines as part of a story.

Tools: Adobe illustrator
Process: The pencil sketch illustration was added to illustrator where I used layering techniques to formulate the poster. I found that my rough illustration didn't have enough clarity or realistic qualities to use for the final poster design. So I staged a photograph of myself to get a better idea of the scale and shadows, I added this photograph as a base layer on illustrator that I could easily lock and hide. A rectangle background was added to the art-board so I could easily change the background colour, I then outlined the body, hair and face of the women. Each in grouped layers so I could easily try colour variations, I then centred the image and added a baseline to let the image breathe. I chose to use three types of typography for the final poster which is normally not recommended with design work. However, each type added a different message that enhanced the way it was portrayed.

Reflection: While brainstorming for ideas for the campaign cause I went back and forth with a few causes that I felt strongly about including ending slave labour, stopping fast fashion and human rights. This cause took my particular interest as I feel it can often be unreported and is still very prevalent in society globally. Therefore, I was hoping to create a persuasive poster that focused on the cause "stop violence against women" for the audience of young adults (20-25). I wanted the poster to represent a clear message, be in a modern style and be relatable for the target audience group. The colour purple was used primarily as it is associated with campaigns of domestic violence and violence against women, it is used frequently in South America with femicide campaigns. While I found it easy to choose a colour theme for the final design I found the experience of converting a hand drawn sketch to illustrator somewhat daunting as I still am developing my skills in this area. Creating this poster design really enhanced my skills on adobe illustrator as I needed to use layers correctly so I could easily edit the image. While I think the poster could use some refining I am overall quite happy with the result and that the message is easy to understand.
